Youth Section
Bolsover Drama Group’s youth section was formed in late 1996, catering for the group’s members aged between 8 and 16. The first production performed was the musical ‘Big Al’ in November 1997. The production was taken “on tour” to Mansfield Palace Theatre in 1998, with profits from the event donated to The Weston Spirit, the charity founded by Falklands War veteran Simon Weston. The show was also performed at the Buxton International Musical Festival, where it won the best chorus award.
The Youth Section have since performed numerous other productions , usually one a year, including ‘Half a Sixpence’, ‘Bugsy Malone’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘High School Musical’. In 2009 the Youth Section performed their first individual pantomime – ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’.
The youth section helps its members develop acting, dancing, singing and technical skills, and many of its past members have gone on to study drama at university and/or gone on to perform in productions for the main group.
In 2007 the youth section were awarded a most prestigious award from DEFRA to educate residents of Bolsover and the surrounding area about the causes and effects of climate change, which resulted in members writing, filming and acting in their own informative DVD which was delivered to houses in the Bolsover area. More details can be found in the climate change section of this website.
